Welcome to the new media art performances and creative workshops

On Thursday, 13 July at 17.00 and Sunday, 16 July at 12.00 at the Liepāja Museum, the association “ASTE. Art, Science, Technology, Education” and the Art Research Laboratory “MPLab” of the University of Liepāja are pleased to invite you to an audiovisual performance and creative workshop programme, plus a curator-led tour of the new media art exhibition “RETROSPEKTROPIA”, which will be displayed in the Liepāja Museum’s Enfilade until 30 July.

On Thursday, 13 July, from 17.00 to 18.00, you are welcome to attend the performance “AV Rhythms”, led by artist and lecturer at the University of Liepāja Paula Vītola. The audiovisual performance features captivating demonstrations of the principle of photoacoustic, introducing long-forgotten technologies.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, 16 July, from 12.00 to 15.00 in the garden of the Liepāja Museum, free creative workshops “Extended Listening Workshop”, “Virtual Reality (VR) Workshop”, “Eco Painting Workshop”, and a guided tour of the exhibition “RETROSPECTOPIA” together with the curator Anna Priedola are open to the public.

In the “Extended Listening Workshop” at 12.00, 13.00 and 14.00, sound artist Krista Dintere challenges you to open your consciousness to hearing and enjoying the ambient surroundings, both directly with your senses by learning deep listening techniques and by amplifying weaker sonic signals such as insect wing flicks with recording technology, creating a fun, shared audio etude as an outcome of the workshop.

The “Virtual Reality (VR) Workshop” at 12.00, 12.30, 13.00,13.30, 14.00 and 14.30, led by the developers of the augmented reality (AR) app ART+, Rogier Jupijn and Agnese Dombrovska, will enable participants to try the simplest form of 3D modelling – 3D sculpting, thus learning about virtual reality construction and getting a taste of what it would be like to paint in a three-dimensional world.

The “Extended Listening Workshop” and the “Virtual Reality (VR) Workshop” are limited in participation, so please register in advance by emailing anna.priedola@liepu.lv (curator). Please indicate your preference of workshop and time in the email.

In the “Eco Painting Workshop” from 12.00 to 15.00, artist Maija Demitere will share her knowledge on creating eco-friendly dyes from edible products and engage the audience to test them by painting on canvas and creating flags to celebrate nature's diversity. All materials will be provided free of charge, and you can join at any time.

At 12.00, 13.00 and 14.00, please join us for a guided tour of the “RETROSPECTOPIA” exhibition with its curator, Anna Priedola.

It highlights 15 works of new media art created by graduates of the University of Liepāja study programme “New Media Art”, today well-known artists.
