Sound days 2024

Sound days 2024

Taking place from April 23rd to 27th, Liepāja will host “Sound Days 2024” – a celebration of Sound Art, Audiovisual Culture, and Design Practices. This international festival this year focuses on sound art, audiovisual culture, and design practices – the search for new means of expression, the pursuit of uniqueness and creative thinking, DIY (aka "do it yourself") culture, practical work with materials and exploring the principles of matter. Workshops, seminars, discussions, masterclasses, presentations of workshop results and audiovisual performance evenings are going to make a core of the event.

The festival centres around a diverse range of workshops led by renowned international artists, musicians, and designers. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills in various fields, including design, sound art, music, visual arts, and technology. Workshops will be held at RTU Liepāja Art Research Laboratory (MPLab) and Liepāja Educational Department Laboratory "FabLab Liepāja", offering instruction in prototyping, electronics, instrument building, sound manipulation, performance techniques, and more. Renowned figures such as Lise-Lotte Norelius (SE), Christian Faubel (DE), Marko Timlin (DE), Shawn Pinchbeck (CA), Julie Delisle (CA), Émile Gingras (CA), Ģirts Ozoliņš (LV), Mārtiņš Zutis (LV), Paula Vītola (LV), Rogier Jupijn (LV/NL), and Fricis Kalvelis (LV) will lead these sessions.

On April 25th, the Great Amber Concert Hall's chamber hall will host the "Times Play - Canadian and Latvian Electroacoustic Music" concert. This presentation features electronic compositions performed on an 8-speaker system, immersing the audience in a captivating sonic experience.

The concert kicks off with a selection of works by the latest generation of Canadian electroacoustic composers. This 75-minute program celebrates the 24th edition of the “JTTP – Jeu de Temps / Times Play” competition, organized by the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC). The concert features both spatial sound compositions and audiovisual experiences. To deepen your understanding, CEC representatives and composers will present a pre-concert talk exploring the rich world of Canadian electroacoustic music.

Look forward to works by Julie Delisle, Jules Bastin-Fontaine, Émile Gingras, José-Gabriel Bazán-Gauthier, Parisa Sabet Sarvestani, Mimi Allard, and Kristian North.

The second half features a curated program by artistic director Voldemārs Johansons in collaboration with the SWIRL.SPACE immersive sound and science festival, highlighting the spatial sound work of Latvian composers, including himself, Platons Buravickis and others.

April 26th features a seminar at culture venue "Kursas putni," offering a platform for festival artists and creative minds to present their work and engage in a stimulating discussion around the festival's themes. Following the seminar, the venue transforms into a stage for young, experimental, and electronic music artists.

The “Sound days” week culminates on April 27th at the Kursa club. Here, participants will showcase the artistic creations they developed throughout the week under the guidance of international mentors. Witness great performances, demonstrations, and a blast of creative energy.

The evening continues with a dynamic program of audiovisual performances featuring established and emerging artists from Canada, Latvia, and beyond. This program includes Christian Faubel (DE), Lise-Lotte Norelius (SE), Marko Timlin (DE/FI), Shawn Pinchbeck (CA/EE), Julie Delisle (CA), Paula Vītola (LV), Alvis Grigaļūns (LV), Spāre Vītola (LV), Marta Ansone (LV), Sairam (LV), and Vanckars (LV).
