Registration is open for the thematic week “Marine Laboratory”

The Science and Education Innovation Centre (ZIIC) of the Liepāja City Education Department has opened registration for the third thematic week of the school summer break “Marine Laboratory”, to be held from 4 to 8 July and customized to kids who are going to attend first and second grades.

These days will introduce young nature explorers to a completely different angle of the sea – from marine plants and creatures to making a new product using algae. Kids will learn how the sea differs from rivers and lakes, carry out various saltwater experiments, take part in creative activities using marine materials and discover what hides in the sands of the seashore.

The Liepāja Special Economic Zone Authority will provide an insight into the man-made economic activities in the sea and its coastline, enabling the young researchers to look into the life of the Port of Liepāja. Accompanied by experts, they will embark on a guided tour of the port area and local fishermen will introduce them to fishing gear and the process of fish catching.

Unlike other thematic weeks, this one will start on Tuesday and end on Saturday, as it is aligned with the celebration of the Sea Festival. Reflecting the occasion, the end of the thematic week is set to celebrate the true spirit of the sea, with a team of scientists from the Latvian Institute of Hydroecology exploring the diversity of the Baltic Sea coastline and the amazing world of marine life.

The week’s activities will mostly take place outdoors and the Nature House will become a venue for young nature researchers to meet and learn new skills. The activities will take place from 10.00 to 14.00 at the ZIIC’s location, on Zirgu sala 2, Liepāja. The weekly fee is 50,00 EUR (including VAT). Payment is by bank card or bank transfer only (cashless).

Online registration is open until 30 June at 15:00 or until the maximum number of registrations has been received via the website
