New Liepāja City Calendar 2024 released featuring the vernacular words of Kurzeme

To promote the cultural heritage of Liepāja and the surrounding regions and spread the awareness of the domesticated words of the Kurzeme region, the new Liepāja City Calendar 2024 is now available at the Liepāja Region Tourist Information Office, 5/6 Rožu laukums, from Tuesday, 28 November.

With Liepāja winning the title of European Capital of Culture 2027 we are dedicating next year’s city calendar to words and phrases that are unique to Kurzeme, with vernaculars like "knausis" (which means "mosquito" in local dialect), "krizdole" (or "gooseberry" in this part of Latvia), "smilāt" (drizzle), "kuiti" (bushes), "plestiķis" (butterfly), "ķocis" (basket), "naģe" (frog), "grāpis" (kettle), "strimala" (herring) and others, thus spreading the region’s domestic vocabulary.

The design of the 2024 calendar is linked to the objectives of the European Capital of Culture 2027, with a primary focus on preserving identity, fostering a sense of belonging, and instilling pride in local roots. This calendar serves as a cultural ambassador, promoting the vernaculars of the region that are an integral part of everyday communication.

Each word in the calendar is depicted in a specially designed drawing and accompanied by an explanation of the word.

The Liepāja City Calendar 2024 shows us 12 domestic words used in Liepāja and its surrounding areas. Each word is thoughtfully depicted in a specially designed drawing, accompanied by an informative explanation. This unique concept, created and published by the Liepāja Central Administration, comes to life through the artistic prowess of the design studio "H2E."

The new city calendar will be available for purchase at the Liepāja Region Tourism Information Office, 5/6 Rožu laukums, in Liepāja. Choose from two sizes of wall calendars – 297x210mm (folded) three-part calendar with a date slot (420x594 mm), priced at 13 and 15 euros, and a desk calendar (205x148 mm) at 5 euros.
