Liepāja Radio Theatre launches its third season

In 2020, when the pandemic started, Liepāja Theatre actress Karīna Tatarinova came up with the idea to create Liepāja Radio Theatre, bringing to life works of several Latvian authors that premiered on Rietumu Radio and Latvijas Radio through voices of Liepāja Theatre actors. The biggest work created so far is the audio performance of Nora Ikstena’s novel “The Virgin’s Lesson” in 6 broadcasts, which can still be listened to on the Liepāja Theatre website under the “Interesting” (“Interesanti”) section. For her previous works, K. Tatarinova received Liepāja Culture Award 2020.

The novel “Riga Moscow” by Sabīne Košeļeva has been chosen for the third season and will be premiered in three audio broadcasts on Latvijas Radio in February 2023. Work on the recording has already begun in the Liepāja Theatre studio, with the help of sound masters Milda Ziemane and Ģirts Siliņš, and will take several months.

“Sabine’s works from the collection “Ministry of Loneliness” have been heard on Liepāja Radio Theatre. This time it is a mini novel. I deliberately searched for something where Liepaja is felt. Here, without naming the city, streets or places, it is felt between the lines. The story is of a young woman, who does not look for and does not take the easy way out. A story about how to live love and survive pain, about prejudices and beliefs,” says K. Tatarinova about her choice of work.

The novel is a poignant but also delicately beautiful 21st century love story; it is a message about the modern world and a person without an identity who is desperately trying to find their place, told in a well maintained and polished language that will be a special treat to listeners.

““Riga Moscow” is my “first-born”, which came after a lot of hard work, so I am especially happy that this work continues to live a life independent of me, addressing, reaching, transforming into other art forms and reaching new readers/listeners. Karīna is easy to work with – she emotionally captures exactly what I was trying to convey in my text at the time, and puts her own creativity into the mix, which is allowing me to look at my own work from a different point of view after eight years. But I am still there, on every page, nothing is lost and the journey continues,” says the author of the novel S. Košeļeva about the collaboration.

This Liepāja Radio Theatre production features Liepāja Theatre actors Madara Kalna, Kārlis Ērglis, Laura Jeruma, Mārtiņš Kalita, Madara Viļčuka, Leons Leščinskis, Armans Kaušelis (who also captures the process in his photographs), Aina Karele, Kārlis Artejevs, Inese Kučinska and director Dmitrijs Petrenko, while in the main roles you will hear the director of the recording Karīna Tatarinova and Dailes Theatre actor Gints Grāvelis, who has become a small part of Liepāja Theatre by participating in the musical “Purva bridējs ugunī”.

As always, Liepāja Radio Theatre has received financial support from Liepāja Culture Board.
