On Saturday, 18 May, from 19:00 to 01:00, residents and visitors of Liepāja are welcome to join the vibrant festivities of the European Night of Museums. This annual event, aligned with the overarching theme of “Museums, Education, and Research,” underscores the pivotal role of cultural institutions in providing enriching educational experiences, while in Liepāja it will also have its own title “Centenary Heritage”, paying homage to the forthcoming 100-year celebration of the Liepāja Museum in November.
Coinciding with International Museum Day, the European Night of Museums offers remarkable cultural journey spanning European and Latvian museums. In Liepāja, museums including the Liepāja Museum on Kūrmājas prospekts 16/18, the Liepāja 17th – 19th Century Interior Museum "Madam Hoyer's Guest House" on Kungu iela 24, the Liepāja Occupation Museum on K.Ukstiņa iela 7/9 and the Karosta Prison on Invalīdu iela 4, will extend their opening hours, welcoming visitors to explore their exhibitions and engage in various activities.
From 19:00 until the early hours of Sunday morning, attendees can attend current art exhibitions, participate in creative workshops, witness demonstrations by craftsmen showcasing traditional skills, and enjoy live performances at the Liepāja Museum and the 17th – 19th Century Interior Museum. Open-air cafes will offer refreshments at designated locations, while a carousel in the garden of Liepāja Museum on Kūrmājas prospekts 16/18 will delight younger visitors.
The renovated Liepāja Occupation Museum will host an evening program featuring “Austrasbērni”, documentary screenings depicting Latvia's history from 1917 to 1990, and an old car show in the museum's courtyard.
Meanwhile, across the Trade Canal, the nightly buzz will hum in Karosta, on Invalīdu iela 4, where Karosta Prison will offer guided animated tours of its renovated museum and present five separate exhibitions free of charge.
Additionally, for the second year, Liepāja Dzintars Secondary School on Celmu iela 6 will participate in the European Night of Museums, offering an array of activities, workshops, exhibitions, and competitions for visitors to enjoy, tailored to the overarching theme “Museums, Educaion and Research”, like – take part in various experiments and creative workshops, visit the fair and exclusive exhibitions, compete in contests, and learn about the history of Liepāja.
