A special musical suite by Brazilian bandola virtuoso and South African jazzman at the “Great Amber”

On Saturday, 15 April at 19.00, two globally acclaimed sound artists – bandola virtuoso Hamilton de Holanda and jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini – will bring the music of Brazil and South Africa to the spectacular acoustics of Liepāja’s concert hall “Great Amber”, performing their latest joint composition “Routes of Discovery”, which is based on the connective and healing power of Brazilian and South African music.

The winner of several Latin Grammy Awards, Brazilian composer, and improviser Hamilton de Holanda, critically acclaimed as the Jimi Hendrix of the bandola (or bandolim) – the 10-stringed Brazilian mandolin, will grace the concert hall stage. Like his predecessors, Hamilton is of mixed race combining traditional Brazilian rhythms and jazz in his music.

De Holanda will be joined by the world-famous South African pianist, composer, and healer Nduduzo Makhathini – the first South African jazz musician featured on the prestigious Blue Note record label.

The two musicians were introduced by renowned jazzman Wynton Marsalis, culminating in “Routes of Discovery”, a musical suite in which de Holanda and Makhathini share their perspectives on the two nations’ odyssey through the harsh colonial times to the halcyon modern age.

“This programme celebrates the message of equality and the shared journey we must walk together for our planet and our communities. Music has the powerful ability to convey our stories and show us our origins and our destinations,” says de Holanda.

The concert will fuse the Brazilian and South African cultural DNA and music, echoing classical music, jazz, hip-hop and feisty southern rhythms. De Holanda and Makhathini’s music will travel across five phases: a blissful day in paradise, chaos and boundary violations, adaptation and spiritual vigour, a new world of compassion and acceptance, and hope for a brighter future.
