The Liepāja Museum offers consultations on tailoring and wearing folk costumes

The Kurzeme Folk Costume Information Centre of the Liepāja Museum at 16/18 Kūrmājas Prospekts is open for consultations on the traditions of folk costumes, tailoring and wearing.

While Latvian choirs and dance groups are gearing up for the summer’s greatest festival of culture, the XXVII Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival, the Kurzeme Folk Costume Information Centre offers you the opportunity to explore the pieces, ornaments, patterns and elements of folk costumes contained in the collection of the Liepāja Museum.

The Kurzeme Folk Costume Information Centre is a good place to seek advice from qualified craftsmen on the choice of materials, different methods of tailoring, or any other aspect of the costume. You can also find out how to create a folk costume on your own, step by step and within the available means.

The Kurzeme region proudly stands out for its age-old traditions and abundant cultural heritage. The Song and Dance Festival, with its century and a half of traditions, is one of them! Meanwhile, the national costume is a symbol of Latvian national identity and an integral part of the festival.

This year, the Song and Dance Festival will take place from 30 June to 9 July in Rīga. This is when not just the singers and dancers, but also anyone who has the opportunity, can dress up and show off. Everyone is welcome to wear their national costumes on the stages of the Song and Dance Festival, at the 150th Anniversary Parade, at the national costume contest and at various folk-art exhibitions in Liepāja and elsewhere in Latvia.
