Residents of the Liepāja Aged Elderly Seniors People Home dress up for International Women's Day

The residents of the Liepāja Aged Elderly Seniors People Home of the Social Welfare Department experienced a pleasant transformation on 7 March, the eve of International Women’s Day, when the 3rd year hair students of the Liepāja State Technical College (LVT) came to dress them up for the celebration.

It was the second time that the students at the Technical College took part in the senior hairdressing practical training, and the residents of the home were very happy about this opportunity.

This time, a temporary hairdressing salon was converted in the seniors’ gym with a large mirror all over the wall and workplaces for nine hairdressers. According to Linda Nīmane, the Head of the House, the residents were very interested even turning some of them down, as this time priority was given to ten people who rarely leave the house and have mobility issues.

Several seniors came to the hairdresser in wheelchairs or with walking sticks, helped by their assistants, but the main cheers went to Antonina, who will celebrate her 95th birthday this year. Some seniors admitted that they rarely go to the hairdresser now, whereas in their younger days they used to attend hairdressing regularly or even weekly.  Two gentlemen were also among the clients, wishing to look more handsome on the occasion.

One after the other, the elderly happily left the hairdresser’s chair expressing their delight with the new haircut and their gratitude for the celebratory feeling that the young people had brought them. For some of the young trainees, who had to take extra care of the thicker and longer hair, the teacher also came to the assistance. The young women also felt pleased with their own achievements, seeing the joy in the eyes of the elderly.

As explained by Aiga Ūdre, Deputy Director of LVT, the initiative to visit the Elderly Home came from the young students themselves, who wanted to impress the seniors with their skills. And the young people appreciated the opportunity to interact with the older generation.

And Evita Līce, who is a hairdresser herself for 25 years and a teacher of young hairdressers for eight years, said that this is one of the most successful classes for young hairdressers in the last five years. " Liepāja hairdressers will have to brace themselves when this new generation starts work”, said the teacher. The girls also regularly take part in various professional competitions, winning prizes, the highest of which is the second prize at “Baltic Beauty 2022”.

Aiga Ūdre meanwhile promised that this tradition of accomplishing a good deed during the students' internship will be continued and the next beauty event at the Elderly Home could take place in May, when we will celebrate Mother's and Family Day.
