Liepāja Culture Award Popular Choice Vote Announced

During this week, from 23 to 29 January, everyone who is an audience member, a follower or an avid fan of cultural life is invited to vote for the cultural events that have been nominated for the award. This year, in accordance with the rules, 29 entries have been submitted for further evaluation and a popular vote.

To cast your vote, please visit https://www.kulturasprojektukonkurss.lv/balso-kulturas-balva/. You can vote once a day for your favourite and most worthy event. You can cast your vote by logging in to the electronic system with the email address to which you will be sent access to the electronic voting system. The voting will also allow you to keep track of the current result.

In 2023, the Liepāja Culture Award will be awarded for the 12th time. The Award aims to highlight and acknowledge those cultural events and personalities who have contributed to the popularity of Liepāja, as well as to celebrate new creative ideas in Liepāja’s culture.

Liepāja Culture Award nominees:

- The Concert Hall “Great Amber” for the internationally renowned “Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. European Concert” event in Liepāja

- The branch of Liepāja Museum: “Madam Hoyer’s Guest House” for promoting the cultural heritage and creating a unique tourist attraction

- The Seaside Cities Literary Academy for organising 18 Zoom meetings (lectures, workshops, exchanges of experience) for people from all over Latvia and our expats in Europe, publications in newspapers and published books, as well as active participation in cultural events

- Liepāja Music, Art and Design High School for the publication of the book “Born in the wind: heart on the palm, roots in the sand”, dedicated to the centenary of Emils Melngailis Liepāja Music High School

- Liepāja Music, Art and Design High School for the painting symposium “Art.Music.Metalurgs”

- Liepāja Independent Theatre for winning the top award in the Latvian amateur theatre production show “The Play of the Year 2021” bringing the awareness of genre and purity of style with the play “The End Game”

- Liepāja Restoration Centre for the series of discussions, lectures, masterclasses and practical workshops “Know / Appreciate / Preserve” on the restoration of historical buildings

- The Creative Association “Šarmants” for a newly created event format combining theatre art with the hospitality industry – Theatre on a tray – dinner with singing waiters

- Juris Pavītols for his book and sound record “Mirror Portrait of a Witness” / Liecinieka spoguļportrets/

- Liepāja Theatre and the creative team of the play “Grimmi” for the performance “Grimmi” directed by Elmārs Seņkovs

- Liepāja pre-school educational institution “Sprīdītis” and Sintija Pīrāga-Ivanovska for a new and creative idea that bolsters the image of Liepāja as a creative cultural city of Latvia, in cooperation with the Liepāja Music, Art and Design High School, creating a new music and art education programme for children

- Mārtiņš Kalita for his creative achievements and versatility in 2022

- Liepāja Museum for the exhibition “The Railway Enters Liepāja (1871-1940)”, created in collaboration with fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev

- Liepāja Theatre, Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and the creative group behind the performance “Theatre” for the collaboration between Liepāja Theatre and Liepāja Symphony Orchestra in the large-scale cabaret production “Theatre”

- Jānis Dripe for the book “The City between the Sea and the Lakes. Liepāja Architecture in 100 Years” / Pilsēta starp jūru un ezeriem. Liepājas arhitektūra 100 gados/;

- Gunita Lagzdiņa-Skroderēna for her outstanding accomplishments in Latvian literature by publishing her fourth book “The Right Time”/Pareizs laiks/ and the success of her novel “The Open Chest” /Lāde vaļā/, which ranked 1st in the bestseller list

- Company “Māras Lācis”, Ltd. for the brand-new cultural space “Atmodas Dārzs” in Karosta

- Liepāja Latvian Society House for the opening events of the concert garden “Pūt, vējiņi!”

- Liepāja Puppet Theatre for broadening the audience and providing methodological support to teachers, teenagers, and parents with the play for teenagers and grown-ups “Dauka. Good Questions”

- Culture House “Wiktorija” for the organisation of high-quality and creative cultural events, creativity and engaging the people of Latvia in cultural processes during 2022

- Vēsma Lēvalde for her historical research and concept developed for the exhibition “Liepāja Opera – 100”

- Kristīne Kārkliņa for promoting the preservation of intangible Latvian cultural heritage among Latvians living in Brazil, as well as building positive publicity for Liepāja, its creative personalities and dance groups “Banga” and “Bandzenieki” worldwide

- The Museum of Puppetry Art and Design in the “Roman Gardens” Gallery for the inauguration of the Museum of Puppetry Art and Design in the “Roman Gardens” Gallery

- Liepāja Music, Art and Design High School for the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the “Melngailis” Music School and the 95th anniversary of the Liepāja Art High School

- Liepāja Children and Youth Centre folklore group “Ķocis” for winning the international online folklore competition “Tartu Folk-off 2022”

- The concert hall “Great Amber” for introducing and promoting Liepāja’s professional artistic traditions by implementing the Liepāja Opera’s centenary anniversary programme

- Liepāja Symphony Orchestra for the 142nd concert season opening concert together with the head conductor Guntis Kuzma

- Liepāja Museum for the exhibition “Liepāja Opera – 100” in the concert hall “Great Amber”, adding the grandeur of the blossoming period of Liepāja Opera to the spacious exhibition hall

- Uldis Marhilēvičs for the artistic production of the “Pūt, vējiņi!” concert garden’s opening concert “Homecoming”.
