First call for cultural projects evaluated

Out of 53 projects that have been submitted to the call for cultural projects, 14 will receive co-financing for the implementation of their ideas. The implementation period for the projects will run from 1 March 2023 to 28 February 2024. The majority of the projects were submitted within the music and dance category, followed by interdisciplinary and visual arts projects. The second call for cultural projects this year is planned for mid-summer.

Projects were evaluated by a jury chaired by Nauris Lazdāns, Deputy Head of the Liepāja Culture Department. The jury included Ieva Dzintare, Head of the Liepāja Museum branch “Liepāja 17th – 19th century Interior Museum “Madame Hoyer's Guest House””, Herberts Laukšteins, Chairman of the Board of the Liepāja Theatre, Inta Šoriņa, Project Manager of the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027”, writer Jana Rūce, entrepreneur, co-author and project manager of the “Julianna Courtyard” and “Peldmāja” Zane Sauka, Head of Marketing and Communication Department of Liepāja Symphony Orchestra Dzintars Hmieļevskis and Choir “Laiks” conductor Ilze Balode.

Criteria of the evaluation or priorities have traditionally aimed to promote the development of a modern and intellectual cultural environment in Liepāja, to introduce new and innovative cultural ideas in the city able to resonate and generate unique results nationally and internationally, to facilitate the quality and diversity of cultural events, the development of traditional and contemporary culture, and to promote the participation of local Liepāja residents in the cultural life of the city.

Only events or activities that are to be carried out in Liepāja and would deliver a socially considerable public contribution to the city were eligible for the call for cultural projects. Key aspects of the project evaluation included the quality of the submitted projects, the conceptual ideas and versatility of the planned cultural events, the development of traditional and contemporary culture and other criteria. The residents of Liepāja will be able to find out when the activities of the supported projects will take place by following the events at kalendars.liepaja.lv.
