Call for nominations for the Liepāja Culture Award

Call for nominations for the Liepāja Culture Award

Until 22 January we invite you to submit candidates for the Liepāja Culture Award nomination for cultural events implemented in 2022. The award ceremony is to be held on 23 February.

“2022 was an eventful year for culture in Liepāja. Liepāja has won the title of European Capital of Culture 2027. Several major new cultural and entertainment venues opened their doors to Liepāja residents and city guests, among them the interior museum “Madame Hoyer’s Guest House”, the newly reconstructed open-air concert garden “Pūt, vējiņi!” which experienced its first season, the cultural space “Atmodas Dārzs” in the Karosta, the event venue “Pegasus Courtyard”, the established Liepāja Restoration Centre and the renovated “Parka Pavilions” in the old town.

These and many other sites and events have revitalised Liepāja’s urban environment and its cultural landscape. This was also the post-pandemic year, seeing large numbers of visitors to events and places once the restrictions and bans on gathering were lifted.

We have joined in campaigns rallying to support Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor, we have marched in the Lāčplēsis Day torchlight procession. I believe that the variety and offer of culture events has expanded considerably and this year the jury will have a real challenge to pick the most outstanding and meaningful events and achievements in cultural life for 2022,” says Nauris Lazdāns, Deputy Head of the Culture Department and Head of the Culture Award Jury, encouraging to nominate the most outstanding and noticeable cultural events for the award.

Applicants for the award can be nominated by both private persons and legal entities, providing a description of the applicant’s achievements and documentation demonstrating them, such as diplomas, honorary mentions, publications in the media, etc. The nominee event may be a collective or individual achievement, a public activity or an undertaking, the outcome of which is visible or perceived as a positive creative asset for the residents and guests of Liepāja, thus generating positive publicity for Liepāja on the Latvian, European or global scale. An application for the award may also be prepared and submitted by the organiser of the cultural event themselves.

The Liepāja Culture Award comprises ten awards categories. Nine of them will be awarded by a jury after assessing the applications. The tenth, a special award, will be awarded as a Popular Choice Prize in a public vote between 23 and 29 January, where everyone who is an audience member, and a follower of cultural life can take part. Last year, 33 candidates were nominated by the jury and the residents of Liepāja.

In 2023, the Liepāja Culture Award will be presented for the 12th time. Award’s mission is to highlight and appreciate those culture events and personalities who have contributed to the popularity of Liepāja, as well as to celebrate new creative ideas in Liepāja’s culture.
